Have you ever been stuck in a situation where you are running late for something and find out that your car cannot get out of the garage because apparently, your garage door opener has stopped working? It can be very irritating because we have installed the opening/closing system in our garages to save some time. And it fails to do that very purpose which it is installed to do.
Garage Door openers can be problematic because of many many reasons but it is not very difficult to get to the root of the problem and try to solve it. In this post also we are going to discuss the most common garage door problems, what causes them and how to fix them.
So let us get started with our article for the day.
1. Garage door not closing all the way down
This is a scenario which doesn’t always bother most of us but yes it is indeed very important that our garage’s door remains closed at all times. It is rather safe that way only and you should make sure that it is working properly. So, in case you are also facing the same problem, there are two possible reasons for it.
a. Sensor Problem
There are sensors on your door that might be causing some trouble and preventing it from closing completely.
It has a simple fix, you just need to make sure that the sensor has clear line-of-sight. If that part is not taken care of, the door is never going down. What actually happens is that the sensor picks up something in its line of sight and then assumes that something to be the floor of the garage, so it stops the closing of the garage at that point only. This is how any kind of sensor works. So, make sure the line-of-sight is clear.
b. Problem with the rollers
If the rollers on your garage door are not working properly, your door will be stuck. If it is just stuck on the way down until now, it will be soon enough when it will start causing problems with the opening of the door too.
In this case, you need to make sure that the roller is well greased/oiled and there is no deposition of rust on its part. If you find any kind of rust or rusty parts, replace them and your doors shall start working perfectly again.
2. Garage door not opening completely
As I mentioned before, if your garage door doesn’t go down properly, it is a high chance that it will start having problems with opening too, and that too soon enough.
The fix for this problem is similar to the fix for the door not closing all the way down. Just make sure your rollers are in good condition and you will be safe from this problem. The deposition of rust in the roller doesn’t let the operation of opening and closing of the garage door smoothly so it is mandatory that you keep a regular check on it.
3. The remote not functioning
This is another common problem we face with garage door openers and it is very frustrating too. If that is the case with you, don’t worry we all have been there and here we have a fix for you.
The first thing that you need to do in this case is to make sure it is the remote that is faulty and not any other part. To do that you have to check if the garage door is opening and closing if you use the wall switch. If that is a yes then you can proceed with this fix.
It might sound a little absurd but there are two things that can be done on your end to solve this problem.
a. Check the range of the remote
Most of the times we forget the garage door opening remotes do not have that much of a range than any other electronic devices that we use. So, just to be sure, try using your remote from a distance that is in the range and check if it starts working or not.
b. Dead batteries
This might be a little embarrassing but please do check your batteries, Yes! Batteries! These are the simplest of things that we usually ignore and the “repair-people” take advantage of.
4. The Wall Switch Not Working
The most common garage door opener problem out of all of them is the wall switch not working. This is something you can’t handle on your own if you don’t have much electrical knowledge. But still, there are some DIY fixes that are safe to try and are worth a shot.
a. If your wall switch is not working you need to follow a series of steps carefully. The first step would be to check the fuse to see if it has tripped/fried or anything of that sort. Now if that is your problem do not try to fix this on your own and call an electrician for help.
b. The second case can be that your switch-circuit may be burnt. In this case, just open the front panel of the switch and see if you can find any burnt wires or parts. If that is your problem, once again do not take the matter in your hands and call a professional for help.
Note: It is not safe or wise to try and play with electrical circuits and stuff if you are not well aware of what you are doing.
5. The garage door doesn’t open or close without force
If this is something you are facing, then you are at luck because we have got a sure shot fix for your problem. Just make sure you follow the fix mentioned below to tackle such a problem.
The garage door getting stuck like that is very common and the same goes for its fix too. The possible reason for the garage door getting stuck is
- Debris in the roller track
- Rusted roller parts.
If you do not check your roller and track, then you might be ignoring some debris which is stuck on the track and it causes the garage door to get stuck while opening or closing. So, always make sure that the track is clear of any kind of debris and the roller is properly lubricated. This will make sure that the garage door is functioning properly.
So, as you can see we have covered almost all of the most common problems that come across our lives if we decide to install garage door openers. Whenever a piece of machinery is involved, the problems in its operation come in a package too but so do the fixes. We just have to figure them out.
In this article also we have specifically done our in-depth research and tested all these fixes personally and then penned them down for you. All these methods work perfectly fine and will definitely solve your problem.
